We’re often asked at the HealthHub Kingsbridge about the difference between acupuncturephysiotherapy-led acupuncture, and dry needling — and it’s a great question.

While these approaches all use fine needles, they are very different in philosophy, assessment and purpose. Understanding which one is right for you can help ensure you get the most effective care from the outset.

This guide explains the differences clearly, so you can make an informed choice. Still unsure? Just call and we can help direct you to the right person.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture

Whole-body, root-cause focused care

Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture is a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. At HealthHub, this is delivered by Jo, our fully trained TCM Acupuncturist.

TCM acupuncture is based on the understanding that symptoms arise when there is an imbalance within the body’s systems. Treatment focuses on restoring balance rather than targeting symptoms alone.

What makes TCM acupuncture different?

  • Full health and lifestyle assessment
  • Pulse and tongue diagnosis
  • Identification of underlying patterns of imbalance
  • Individualised treatment plans

TCM acupuncture is commonly used to support:

  • Chronic or persistent pain
  • Stress, anxiety and emotional wellbeing
  • Sleep problems and fatigue
  • Hormonal imbalance, menopause and fertility
  • Digestive issues and immune health

This approach is particularly suited to people experiencing multiple or long-standing symptoms, or those looking for a natural, whole-body approach to health.

Physiotherapy-Led Acupuncture

Pain relief and rehabilitation support

Physiotherapy-led acupuncture uses needles as a clinical tool for pain relief and recovery, often alongside hands-on treatment, rehabilitation exercises and movement retraining.

This approach is typically symptom-focused and is most often used for musculoskeletal pain and injury.

Physiotherapy acupuncture may help with:

  • Back, neck and joint pain
  • Muscle tension and trigger points
  • Pain following injury or overuse
  • Supporting movement and rehabilitation

Physiotherapy-led acupuncture:

  • May use selected acupuncture points and dry needling techniques
  • Is focused on pain modulation and tissue response
  • Does not include full TCM diagnosis such as pulse or tongue assessment

If your primary concern is pain affecting movement or function, physiotherapy-led acupuncture may be the most appropriate starting point.

Targeted muscle release

Dry needling is a technique used by physiotherapists and sports therapists to release tight or overactive muscles and reduce pain.

It involves inserting fine needles directly into trigger points within muscles to help them relax and reset.

Dry needling is commonly used for:

  • Muscle tightness and spasm
  • Sports injuries
  • Overuse injuries
  • Supporting recovery after training or competition

Dry needling:

  • Is not Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Does not follow acupuncture meridians
  • Is based on modern anatomy and neurophysiology

This technique can be particularly effective when muscle tension is contributing to pain or restricting movement.

Which treatment is right for me?

The right approach depends on what you’re experiencing and what your goals are.

  • If you’re dealing with ongoing stress, hormonal issues, sleep problems or complex, persistent symptomsTCM acupuncture may be most suitable.
  • If your main concern is pain, injury or movement-related issuesphysiotherapy-led acupuncture or dry needling may be more appropriate.
  • If muscle tightness or sports-related strain is the issue, dry needling through physio or sports therapy can be very effective.
