The Secret to Banishing Overwhelm & Burnout
Jan 23, 2023Hands up if you are starting the new year somewhat frazzled and lacking the enthusiasm for ridiculous new year’s resolutions and fresh challenges? I’m totally with you. After a full-on December with all the festivities and additional demands on my time, I just want to crawl into a dark cave and place my head on a cool pillow. It’s dark, cold and all my instincts are telling me to hibernate and recover.
So why do we get bombarded in January with the message of “New Year, New You”? To me, just thinking about this makes me feel even more sleepy and overwhelmed!
I love the idea of January being an “interim” month. It falls outside of the old year and a time for pause and reflection before the “new year” starts a proper in February. Many ancient civilisations had the same idea. Chinese New Year is usually in February (or the end of January), along with many others.
New Year Overwhelm
Once January started it used to fill me with fear. What direction am I heading this year in my work and personal life? What do I want to do and achieve? Often, I’d focus on big time goals that were totally unrealistic to achieve in the 12 months ahead. I’d look at others who were so calm and together, wondering where they learnt this magic skill. How did they “find” time and energy for the fun stuff in life. They’d always be regularly exercising taking walks with friends. Yet in the same 24 hours I couldn’t get half my S*$# done and had zero energy for the exercise or the “active relaxation” I knew I should be doing to properly take care of myself.
What the hell was I missing? Was I off school the day they taught this stuff?
Life felt completely out of control and was getting quicker! I was completely at the mercy of my day instead of me bossing it. I was exhausted, burnt out, foggy headed, low and constantly ill. I completely lacked any joy and fun in life. I wondered if that was the reward for getting all my “jobs” done first?
Overwhelm & Burnout
Praise the lord for a rather marvellous American lady who miraculously popped into my inbox one day. She taught me that many others felt like this too. My overwhelm with life was because I didn’t know how to spend my time. I wasn’t clear about what was most important and therefore spent most of my time doing that stuff that wasn’t the real priority.
Ta da!
It was that simple. Time management in essence.
Overwhelm is the leading cause of burnout. I’d been burnt out since my late teens living in a permanent state of fright / flight stress response. My whole system was on its knees. Having lived like this for so long, I didn’t know any different. My physical and mental health were in a bad way. Thank god I felt the help I needed to turn things around.
As with many things, burnout is a spectrum. You can be on the scale going in the wrong direction for many months and years before the shitake really hits the fan.
Clarity on How to Spend Your Time
So, the real answer is to figure out how you really want to spend your time. How you want your life to feel. What are the few things you really want to do or achieve and what are few actions that will really change the needle. The holy grail comes down to figuring out what is most important to you. When much of your time is spent is service to others at work or in family’s and relationships, it’s easy to lose track of what matters to you most. When you aren’t clear on this you can’t put the right co-ordinates into your GPS and who knows where you will end up. You will end up finding the town of burnout at some point.
The ANSWER You Didn’t Know You Needed
The questions above are pretty big ones. Their enormity made me shy away from sitting down and answering them initially. But thank God I plucked up the courage and prioritised the time to do it properly because the transformation in my life has all come from getting super clear.
There is an easy step by step process that you can take to figure out this big stuff. I’ve got it and want to share it with you. It’s given me my life back, which I still am in awe of. That’s why I want to help as many of you as possible get the same life changing results. I can help you do less and achieve more (yes I didn’t believe this either when I was told it!). It’s true.
This process has brought me so much peace, space and productivity. It’s improved all my relationships and made me a better, more patient Mum. I’m more focused and better at my job and leading the team. I’m far more fulfilled and happier as a result. Perhaps the biggest thing is my health is so much better (mentally and physically). I have energy for exercise and the fun stuff in life. I have down time for relaxing. My day isn’t jam packed from morning until night. This process has given me my life back and I’ve regained my joie de vivre from childhood.
