“Keep Moving”, It’s Arthritis Care Awareness Week!
May 13, 2022Arthritis Care Awareness Week is a UK based event, which raises awareness about arthritis, gathers support for people with this condition, and highlights the work of Arthritis Care (arthritiscare.org.uk), a charity that supports this event.
Arthritis is a condition marked by painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints.
This year’s Arthritis Care Awareness Week theme is ‘Keep Moving’.
Jane Asher the president of Arthritis Care UK is encouraging everyone to keep moving.
Exercise is particularly important to people with arthritis as it helps to keep joints mobile, maintains strength and reduces pain and stiffness. It also helps generalized fitness levels.
Here are some facts about arthritis:
- There are many types of arthritis, which can affect a person in different ways.
- Arthritis is the single biggest cause of disability in the UK
- While arthritis is normally associated with older people it can affect people of all ages. 27,000 people in the UK under the age of 25 have arthritis
- The founder of Arthritis Care, Arthur Mainwaring Bowen, was only 25 years old, when he developed a form of arthritis known as Ankylosing Spondylitis. This is an inflammatory condition of the spine and joints.
- Ankylosing Spondylitis can feel different to other types of back pain. Often people with an inflammatory spine arthritis feel pain and stiffness that wakes them up during the night, have alternating buttock pain, feel better when exercising and worse when resting, feel very stiff in the morning and have pain continuously for more than 3 months.
