You know how it goes… You start something new. You’re excited. Motivated. You imagine a different future. Your confidence grows, and hope starts to build.

Then – crash. The wheels fall off.

You aggravate your symptoms doing something that once felt normal. You relax, thinking things are improving, because you’ve started your rehab. Then it hits you. You’re back where you started – or so it seems.

It’s incredibly easy to sink into that pit of despair and feel like there’s no point in trying again. After all, what’s the point? You’ve been here before. You found the courage to try again – whether it was for your back pain, neck, shoulder niggles, pelvic floor issues, fitness, or body confidence – and now it feels like all that hope was wasted.

One of the most common things we hear at HealthHub Kingsbridge is:
“It’s just my age.”

It’s the go-to excuse. A way to rationalise giving up, because surely nothing can turn back time. But that belief holds you back. Like anyone else, I can find excuses for why I’m “too busy” to exercise – even though I know how much it helps both body and mind. It’s always easier to step away than to keep going.

Here’s the truth: this journey is a game of Snakes and Ladders.

Think about it. When has life ever gone smoothly without setbacks? Whether it’s your health, work, family, or even running a business (nine years in, I can confirm this), there’s always a moment where you feel like you’re back on your metaphorical backside. It’s exhausting – picking yourself up, finding belief again, reminding yourself that change is possible.

But I promise you two things:

1. There will always be snakes.
Sometimes small and manageable. Sometimes massive and overwhelming. But they will show up.

2. There will always be ladders.
Ways forward. Glimpses of light. Unexpected progress. You just have to keep going long enough to find them.

This isn’t just about your body. It’s about life. The hurdles are real. The chocolates are unpredictable (cheers, Forrest). But there is always a way forward – even if it’s not the one you expected.

So, as we approach the end of the year, take a moment.
Remember what you hoped for back in January. What hasn’t quite happened yet. What you’ve quietly put on hold.

And hold on to your hope.

Please don’t give up when you hear “It’s your age,” or “It’s just wear and tear,” or “You’ll need to stay on those painkillers.” That’s not the whole story. Not here at HealthHub Kingsbridge.

We see people every single day who thought nothing could change – until it did.

Their stories move us to tears. And they remind us that change always starts with that tiny spark of belief. Just 1% is enough to take the next step.

So if you’re hoping for things to be different in your body, get in touch. We’d love to help you find your ladder.

And I’ll leave you with one of the greatest lines John Cleese ever delivered in Clockwise:

“Despair I can handle… It’s the hope.”

But please – don’t stop hoping.
